Client
Skånetrafiken - Leading Swedish public transport authority, with 170 million passengers per year, within Skåne county and in transit between three Swedish regions and the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen.
Challenge
Skånetrafiken procured a ticketing system, but it quickly became outdated with the rise of smartphones. Commuters expected modern and mobile-friendly services. Skånetrafiken faced the choice of renewing the outdated system or exploring new options.
Solution
Skånetrafiken decided to innovate and build a new system with external expertise. In 2015, they partnered with Qinshift to accelerate their digital transformation. A dedicated team of Qinshift consultants and Skånetrafiken employees collaborated at a brand-new development hub at Malmö Central Station, enabling quick development of a full backend ecosystem and direct commuter feedback.
In 2017, they launched a new backend, a user-friendly app, and a simplified pricing model. Cloud technology adoption made them pioneers in the Swedish public transport sector. Qinshift helped formulate a secure cloud strategy, leading to cost savings, scalability, and personalized travel information.
Benefits
The partnership yielded remarkable results. Skånetrafiken's customer satisfaction index rose from 46% in 2015 to 76% in 2019. Over 75% of passengers now use the app, and "tap and ride" became a successful payment method. Their success also inspired other Swedish transport operators like Östgötatrafiken and Blekingetrafiken to join in on the project, with more expected to follow suit.
